Citations and domain types

Last updated: September 3, 2026

The Citations tab shows you which sources AI models use when generating answers to your selected prompts. This helps you understand where AI gets information about your brand and which websites may be influencing your visibility in AI-generated answers.

Use this information to identify the websites and sources you should focus on to improve your brand’s AI search visibility.

What you can see in Citations

For each cited domain, you can see:

  • Cited domain - The website or domain that was referenced by the AI model.

  • Domain type - The category of the domain, such as a review site, social platform, or other source.

  • Your presence - Whether and how often your brand is mentioned or represented on that domain.

  • Competitor presence - How your competitors are represented on the same domain.

  • Total citations - The total number of times the domain was cited across your selected prompts.

Explore the exact source

Click on any domain to see the exact URL that was used as a citation.

This allows you to go directly to the source and understand:

  • What information AI models are using

  • How your brand is represented

  • Which competitors are mentioned

  • What content or pages may be contributing to your AI visibility

By analyzing your citations, you can identify high-impact domains and URLs where improving your presence could help increase your brand's visibility in AI-generated search results.

Domain types:

Editorial - Independent media: news, magazines, trade press, independent blogs. Content is the product, not a brand selling its own non-media offering.

Community - Multi-voice discussion: Reddit, Quora, forums. Organic conversation, not structured reviews or social broadcasting.

Review site - Structured rating and review platforms: G2, Trustpilot, Capterra. Separate from Community because the behavior differs and B2B presence there is a distinct decision.

Social - Social networks with broadcast posts: LinkedIn, X, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok. One-to-many profiles, not threaded forums.

Reference - Authority and knowledge sources: Wikipedia, docs, glossaries, .edu, .gov. Neutral and informational.

Corporate - One organization selling its own product or service for end users to consume: DTC brands, consumer subscriptions, agencies, company homepages. A brand blog on the same domain is still Corporate.

Platform - B2B tools, APIs, or infrastructure other businesses use to serve their customers: commerce software, payments, CRM, cloud/dev platforms (e.g. Shopify, Salesforce, Stripe). End-user transactions happen off-domain.

Marketplace - Multi-seller transactional platforms: Amazon, eBay, Etsy, app stores, rides, food delivery, stays, large multi-brand retailers.

Other - Non-transactional aggregators, directories, comparison/listing sites, or anything unmatched above.

Unknown - No clear signal from domain or content.
